Introduction to Singapore
Singapore is a unique multi-cultural Asian society, with a strong blend of Chinese, Malay and Indian traditions and a distinct British colonial heritage. Here you can find great food, vibrant nightlife, arts and cultural events. It is easy to get around in Singapore as English is widely spoken. Make sure you leave time to enjoy this shopper's paradise, especially during the Great Singapore Sale in July.
Singapore is a perfect destination to easily combine with other travel ideas. Begin an overland adventure from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur or Penang, experiencing all the stunning scenery in between…Or combine 3 destinations at once and continue all the way to Bangkok. Another great extension idea from Singapore is an exotic beach resort stay in the Indonesian island of Bintan - just 45 minutes away by ferry.
Location: Southeast Asia
Area: 647.5 km².
Population & Language:
The population of the island of Singapore is approximately 3.1 million, of which about 78% are Chinese, 14% Malay and 7% Indian and Pakistani, 1% other. English is the language of business and administration and is widely spoken and understood throughout the country. Most Singaporeans are bilingual, though, speaking Mandarin, Malay or Tamil in addition to English.
